Default Manchester United May Play Summer Match In Macau

Manchester United May Play Summer Match In Macau
February 20th 2007 by Sport Editor

English Premier League leaders Manchester United may play this summer in Macau in an exhibition match to celebrate the opening of a new casino resort, a news report said Tuesday.

The Red Devils, who have a massive Chinese fan base, are reportedly being targeted for a match in July or August to coincide with the opening of the 3.2-billion-US-dollar Venetian Resort.

Manchester United has already confirmed they will tour Asia this summer, visiting Japan and South Korea, and the club is due to announce full details of their four-stop tour later this week.

Sources quoted Tuesday by the South China Morning Post said that the team was likely to include Macau in its tour when details of the itinerary were announced.

It would be the first appearance by Manchester United in Macau, a densely populated territory of 450,000 people on the southern tip of China, famous for its casinos, which draw millions of visitors a year.

The team played in neighbouring Hong Kong in 1997, 1999 and 2005 but failed to fill the 40,000-seat Hong Kong Stadium to capacity on its last visit, when it arrived without some star players.

Manchester United's Premiership rivals Liverpool, Fulham and Portsmouth are due to play July 25-27 in Hong Kong, along with the winners of Hong Kong's domestic FA Cup.

Manchester United is currently six points clear of Chelsea atop the English Premiership and is still competing in the Champions League and domestic FA Cup competition.
