Default Pack yourbags, now Ronaldo!

Pack yourbags, now Ronaldo!

Stuart Mathieson
10th July 2006

CRISTIANO Ronaldo smacks of an ungrateful young man looking for excuses to wheedle his way out of Old Trafford - United must cash in on him now.

Sir Alex Ferguson will be understandably livid and feeling desperately let down by the 21-year-old's comments following Portugal's third and fourth place World Cup defeat to Germany.

The winger claims that neither United's president (owner Malcolm Glazer) nor Reds' boss Fergie have defended him over the Wayne Rooney red card incident.

"I don't want to be rude to anyone but they should have defended me," he said.

"I feel fragile at this time. I didn't do anything wrong to anybody. It was not my fault for what happened."

If Ronaldo really knew the workings of Old Trafford then he'd know that the Glazers don't involve themselves in dressing room politics. Never have and never will.

And he'll also know that Fergie famously protects and looks after his players, particularly the young ones, better than anyone else.

If Ronaldo had come back to Carrington after his post-World Cup holiday the United manager would have taken him under his wing straight away.

Give David Beckham a call, Cristiano, if you want to know how Ferguson shields his players when the going gets rough.

Besides, this is the manager who gave you holidays back home in Madeira in mid-season when you were a new teenager at Old Trafford.

The same boss you praised for taking a £12.5m gamble on you when you came over to England from Sporting Lisbon when no other club would put their money on the table for an 18-year-old.

The same man you thanked for the caring treatment when your father died and when you were wrongly accused of rape.

The same person who effectively dumped United's best ever goalscorer when he backed you in the training ground row with Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Now you bleat about nobody defending you over the Gelsenkirchen episode when the thanks you extended to United and Fergie for all that previous protection before the Rooney row was to admit you wanted to leave for Real Madrid in the lead up to that controversial quarter-final!

You can't have it all ways, Cristiano.

The word in the Stretford pubs last term was that Ronaldo's box of tricks was wearing thin.

The Ruud and Rooney incidents had probably all but lost you the support of most of the fans.

Turning on Fergie and making no bones about your desire to turn out in the Bernabeu next term has successfully and deviously signed your Old Trafford death warrant.

Clearly, that's what you wanted.

The desire might be strong for the Reds not to let you succeed in getting your way and hold you to your lucrative contract you signed until 2010 only last November.

United should call it quits, demand a double-their-money £25m from Real and search for someone more grateful and loyal.
