Default Reds under pressure over Hargreaves deal

Reds under pressure over Hargreaves deal

MEN 18th August 2006

OWEN Hargreaves will today urge Bayern Munich to let him join United - but the Reds are under pressure to tie up a deal before next Friday.

Sir Alex Ferguson's other midfield option, Marcos Senna of Villarreal, has told the Old Trafford boss to sign him in seven days' time, or he will stay put in La Liga.

Hargreaves, who would cost around £13m, is Fergie's priority and if the England ace can engineer a move from Germany, the Reds chief will dump plans to sign Senna.

But if the battle to prise the Hargreaves from Bayern extends beyond a week today, United risk losing out on the £2m-rated Senna.

Hargreaves, 25, is intent on attempting to make Bayern drop the `not for sale' stance taken by general manager Uli Hoeness.

"Owen will continue to push for a move there (to United), there is no need to discuss any other offers," Hargreaves' agent Roman Grill said.

"Owen rates United on the same level as Bayern Munich with the advantage that, being an England player, it would be better to play at United.

"There, he could replace Roy Keane and play in his favourite position in front of the defence where he can show off his full abilities. The time has now come to evaluate where he is in his career."

Having lost Michael Ballack to Chelsea this summer Munich are ready to fight to keep their prize asset.

However, Villarreal and Senna are running out of patience. The Spanish international's agent, Eli Coimbra, said: "For about 20 days we have been in negotiations with United.

"What is more, they have asked us twice for more time to establish negotiations definitively. We have decided that we cannot wait any longer.

"We understand the situation at Manchester, but also we understand that Villarreal are annoyed by this and that they want this situation to end.

"For that reason, if by next Friday no serious offer exists, the decision of the player is clear - to remain with Villarreal.

"I've had many conversations with Manchester and I believe they want to sign Marcos. But this situation is dragging on."
